FAQ

Why are observations in my garden not included in my project?

I'm seeing a fair number of my observations from home not included in my garden project because the location diameter is too large.
I'm not sure why/when that happens, but I can adjust it manually. It's a hack, however, because if I look at my observation on the map it of course shows all of them, and not just the ones that aren't in the project. If we had the option to filter for something NOT fitting a value or being in a project, I think it would be quite valuable.

Answer: LOCATIONS NOT INCLUDED BECAUSE lOCATION ACCURACY TOO LARGE.

you can use the url codes to exclude observations:
&not_in_place=123 Tip: to get the number of your place, open it and in the url add ".json" to the url: the first number is it
or
&not_in_project=my-own-garden insert name of your garden

But you need to find the observations that ARE IN! So use the Explore option, and zoom into your garden. Use the Circle Tool and adjust it to include all observations that should be in your garden. It should look like this (but centred on your garden):
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?lat=-34.05345&lng=18.45645&place_id=any&radius=0.05&subview=map

*. You may want to additionally filter for your own observations (you cannot fix other people's such as your brother, mother, son or visitors).
*. Because this is a garden project, switch off the verifiable option in the filter box to include any planted or captive observations.

So now you have a circle filter around your garden, but this is everything. To exclude those in your home project, add the "not in text" at the end of your url.
It should read something like:
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?lat=-34.05345&lng=18.45645&place_id=any&radius=0.05&subview=map&verifiable=any&not_in_project=dreyersdal-rd-bergvliet
So: now you have a circle around your garden, and the observations not in!

Now there are there are two issues.

1 There are those that you mapped outside, instead of inside - they will need to be moved.
This happens when one is careless and does not zoom in far enough when adding the observation. It also happens on the app, when there was not enough time for the GPS to get a good locality, or if there was a tree, wall or powerline interfering with the signal.
.* These you will have to do one by one, and move them into your garden.

2 Then there are those with too large a Location Error.
This happens when one places the icon from too far out. Or if the app did not get a good enough fix (usually from not having enough time).
There is also a common mistake many people make of thinking that if they are inside the garden, they can make the Location Accuracy big enough to include the garden, by just making it bigger. But iNat calculates the area, and if more than half of the circle is outside the garden, then iNat does not include it. Because your garden is so small, you will need a value of less than 50m or sometimes less (or more for a smallholding) for it to be in your garden.
We can filter these with the url option
&acc_above=50 (acc= location accuracy)
We can add it to our garden observations using the first step above, like so
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?lat=-34.05345&lng=18.45645&place_id=any&radius=0.05&subview=map&acc_above=50

What is nice about these is that they can be bulk edited - you dont have to do them one by one.
If you are not used to bulk editing, then please be very careful - it is very easy to make a mistake, so carefully follow the steps and dont get distracted or try to take shortcuts please.

The first thing you need to do is enable bulk editing.

To do so, in the url line for your filter, add slash your username to the line, just after the word observations and before the "?" - like so:
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/user_name?lat=-34.05345&lng=18.45645&place_id=any&radius=0.05&subview=map&acc_above=50
NB: YOUR username, not the word "user_name"; slash looks like this "/"

You are now ready to bulk edit.
Go to the bottom of the page:
.* make sure at the bottom that you have 200 - the max - selected. You cannot edit more than 200 at a time. (Some people find 200 does not work, and they need to do them 100 at a time.

From this:
click batch edit
click select all
click edit selected
NOW BE CAREFUL: dont mess up, (if you, then do dont save and start again).
click Batch Operations
Find Acc (m) - change this to say 10 [DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE - esp not the map!! - unless of course, you want to change the location of them all to one place]
click Apply below this.
go right down to the bottom. [think carefully and double check]
click Save All

repeat for next 200 (or 100)

That should sort out the problem. Hope that this helps.

Please note going forward: please pay attention to Location Accuracy and where exactly the pin is dropped. Zoom in until you can see your protea bush before saving that butterfly record, dont do it from the moon.

This is such good advice, I managed to sort all of mine in less than half an hour. Thank you!
