Alamo Area Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists Camera Trap Project set out to assist Texas Nature Tracker(TNT) biologists discover populations, document change, and track status of Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) across Bexar County and surrounding Metro Area Counties. The project’s starting points are in Public Greenbelts and natural areas, owned by the City of San Antonio. Current targeted locations have been approved by the City of San Antonio – Natural Area Dept. Where sites will have up to 6 month or less study period. All sites are away from public walking/bike trails where wildlife can be observed in their natural environment via remote game cameras.
Collection of wildlife data is to provide evidence for monitoring Species of Greater Conservation Need and assist Texas Nature Trackers biologists via the collection of data on a wide variety of species. Findings are submitted to iNaturalist not only through this project but also applied to appropriate TNT projects to help enrich data for various applications such as species distribution models and the Texas Conservation Action plan. Our findings assist in future conservation efforts for SGCN across Texas and assist City of San Antonio Natural Area wildlife biodiversity numbers.
Initial game cameras are on loan, courtesy of TNT biologists. However, chapter members also provide photographs from their individually owned member cameras and devices. (taggeded as: Camera Site: AAMN)
The PRIMARY OBJECTIVES of this project are:
to learn more about the status of biodiversity of wildlife throughout our natural areas in the metro area while enhancing our chapter mission, and making contributions to Texas Parks and Wildlife’s research and conservation efforts.
The Texas Master Naturalist program is a natural resource-based volunteer training and development program sponsored statewide by Texas AgriLife Extension and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
The mission of the program is “to develop a corps of well-informed volunteers who provide education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities for the state of Texas.”
