Observations will no longer be added to this project as we have moved and the new owners have converted most of the yard back to turf grass.
This project is a tally of all the non-captive, non-cultivated species that live in or visit my urban lot. Currently it is a garden of primarily exotic plantings and a very small mowed lawn area. The only naturally occurring tree is a large Quercus rubra. The only other large, woody plants are Prunus sargentii, Viburnum lantana, Viburnum carlesii, Viburnum dentatum, Cornus alternifolia, Amelanchier, and Asimina triloba. The adjoining lots and the neighborhood in general have a good number of mature trees.
No pesticides or herbicides are used to maintain the gardens. Over the coming years I will be introducing native plants to replace the exotics as opportunities arise. While there is currently a diverse complement of species observed, I would like to see if the changes in plantings attract significant numbers of new species, particularly invertebrates.
