Welcome to Waterbury Wild

Since their development in 1977, over 100 municipal conservation commissions have been created throughout Vermont. These organizations, often appointed by a Select Board, provide a much needed voice for conservation in their communities. One of the tasks of the Waterbury Conservation Commission is to "develop and maintain an inventory and conduct studies of Waterbury’s natural resources". An admirable mission, but one that we cannot accomplish on our own. This is where you come in! We are asking residents and visitors of Waterbury to help us collect important biodiversity data that will inform conservation planning in our community. We have chosen the iNaturalist platform as it is easy to use and provides a wealth of information. Whether you upload historical photos from your back yard, or venture out on a local trail with your smartphone, your submissions help us to fulfill our mission of protecting Waterbury's natural resources.

As our project develops, you may get requests from us looking for specific observations. One such call may be for observations of Ash trees. These trees are common throughout Waterbury and will be significantly impacted by the spread of the invasive Emerald Ash Borer. Mapping these trees will help us in developing a plan to deal with the arrival of the invasive pest in the coming years.

Waterbury Wild provides you an opportunity to be a citizen scientist. You can expand your own knowledge of the natural world while increasing our knowledge of the natural communities throughout Waterbury. We look forward to seeing your submissions, and encourage you to reach out with questions or to learn more about the work of the Waterbury Conservation Commission.
