These guys are a protected species in Illinois, but it's only because we are on the edge of their range. They're abundant where they are found.

Description

I had a very difficult time identifying a lot of the Desmognathus salamanders found on this trip; any help is appreciated. This individual could also possibly be a Shovel-nosed Salamander (D. marmoratus). Found in a stream near a trail leading up to Cucumber Gap.

I work as a tour guide at Bull Shoals Caverns in the town of Bull Shoals Arkansas. I rarely see these particular salamanders, but this year I've already seen them twice in one of the pools at the back of the cave. I took these particular pictures last year. Sorry that the photos are so blurry. I was using my camera phone and it didn't focus too well in the low light of the cave.

Description

The first one we have found this Far East.. one was found in Lewis county but I’ve yet to find another. Every-time I find a spotted now, my heart starts to race, because back when I found this guy I thought it was a spotted salamander.
