What

Bog Cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos)

Observer

huronia

Date

July 2023

Description

Fairly certain this is oxyccocos but I don't have good experience with this and was confused about different plants in the same area seeming to have noticeably different leaf sizes and bracteole size and shape. Those posted in an accompanying observation.

This plant:

  • Pretty much all trailing with flowers near top and topping all stems I have pictures of
  • leaves mostly 5-7 mm, mostly narrow not really rounded, strongly revolute (?)
  • bracteoles seem to be more obscure and red around the half way mark
  • one berry found ~8 mm

Macrocarpon:
FNA - often ascending; leaves 5-18 mm long, narrowly elliptic, slightly revolute; bracteoles 2, green 1-2 mm wide; berry 9-14 mm
MNW - erect to ascending; leaves 1/3-2/3 in long, oblong-elliptic, rounded, slightly revolute; bracteoles; tiny bracteoles at or above middle of stalk; berry 1/3-2/3 in
MIF - prolonged stems beyond floweres/fruit; leaves rounded, bracteoles green (rarely red) .8-2.7 mm wide
Oxycoccos:
FNA - trailing; leaves 3-10 mm long, ovate, strongly revolute; bracteoles 0-5, red <1mm wide; berry 6-12 mm
MNW - leaves 1/4-1/3 in long, oblong-elliptic, tapered, strongly revolute; tiny bracteoles at or below middle of stalk; berry 1/4-1/2 in
MIF - flowers/fruit appearing terminal; leaves acute; bracteoles red >0.8 mm wide
