Description

USA: Oregon: Coos County: Bullards Beach State Park: on Creamcups along the main south-north foredune trail between Black John Trail and Pearl's Trail (both east-west cross trails).

  • I have found adults of Meloe strigulosus and Meloe franciscanus along the foredune trails here, although the latter species only twice in early 2018.
  • According to Dr. John Pinto (UC Riverside, retired), the triungulin (first instar larva) of Meloe strigulosus has 2 long appendages while the triungulin of Meloe franciscanus has 4. The triungulin of Meloe strigulosus waits in the flower head for a host bee to arrive.
  • Length ~2 mm excluding tail
  • On flower of Creamcups (Platystemon californicus)
