I would like to edit this field to put "unknown" as the first entry as projects that use it default to a value of "male" if nothing is selected - slight gender bias being created.
Trouble is I get error "Name has already been taken", probably because there is another field "Gender". (allowing upper/lower case variations of a fieldname creates other problems too - in some parts of the site they are treated as equivalent, in others as different fields)
FYI, there is already a "sex" field: http://www.inaturalist.org/observation_fields/5
Also, the word "gender" usually describes a human social identity, which doesn't necessarily correspond to biological sex.
