Seen early morning outside my office front door, constricting a large gecko that, in turn, had a grip on the snake. Fortunately for the snake the gecko only had hold of a skin flap at the snake's throat, narrowly missing its trachea.
I placed an inverted basket over the pair so that the drama could play out undisturbed by foot traffic.
Later, when I removed the basket it was evident that the snake has prevailed. Only sign of the gecko was a lump in the snake.

Box-tree Moth. Photographed in Toronto, Ontario on 28 August 2018. Hot on the heels of Ontario's first record seen by Karen Yukich not too far from here a couple of days ago. I was amazed to see it sitting on the top egg carton inside the trap! In fact I took the trap into the house before extracting it as I didn't want to lose it! This East Asian native is a smart looking creature that is perhaps destined to become common and widespread, like it has in much of Western Europe... Whatever the case I was pretty excited to see it!

One fly was still moving and the infection had only caused one wing to be bent up and non-functional. I could touch it with my finger and it didn't run away. During the course of photographing the other flies this still living one climbed to the top of the plant that I had found it on, which is textbook behavior for the infection as some how the mycelium grows into a portion of the fly brain that makes it want to climb to a high place for better spore dispersal

Description

Common on Arizona Rosewood, Vauquelinia californica. Prior to this, the host plant for this species (or anything in this genus) was unknown.

The species was originally described from Tucson in 1944, and was described as being very Neotriozella-like but with the vertex unusual enough that it was placed in this genus instead. I didn't really understand that reasoning until seeing it for myself... this really is a weird-looking psyllid with an unusually-shaped head and it doesn't look like anything else.

The species hadn't been collected or photographed since its description until last year, when Matt Muir photographed one at blacklight on the Arizona trip. I was there, but left early and didn't end up seeing the psyllid until Matt uploaded his photos. But with only a dorsal, I was at a loss as to what it was (until today).

I've been chasing this "Rosewood Triozid" since the end of May, when I first found abundant nymphs and teneral adults on the hostplant at the Sonoran Desert Museum. Since then, I've been looking for naturally growing Rosewood, but I'd been looking too high; apparently Molino Canyon at around 4000 feet is the place I should have been looking. Sure enough, I found psyllids right away.

Most were adults with the mature coloration, but a few tenerals were present. Interestingly, some of the tenerals from the Sonoran Desert Museum population look slightly different, with slightly differently shaped female genitalia and thorax/head structure; the genal cones are still tightly-appressed as in Neotriozella. Further investigation may reveal whether these differences are either due to interspecific variation, a product of being teneral, or if in fact there are multiple closely-related Rosewood Triozids
