Description
I was walking through my yard, returning from a good day of photography. I passed the large boxwood shrub in my backyard and was surprised to hear a funny sound emanating from it, much like the snap-crackle-pop of Rice Krispies, or like distant rain falling on a tin roof. I stuck my head in the bush and listened, amazed. I noticed the sweet fragrance of boxwood blossoms, but nothing else. I watched the bush closely for movement, looking for unfolding leaving or opening buds, but, not surprisingly, there was none. So I ran inside to tell my family.
"That's impossible," said my mom when I told her the bush was making noise. "There must be something in it."
"I heard that sound yesterday," said Clare. "Mary thinks it's a rattlesnake."
"It's the plant growing," stated my four-year-old sister, Jane, in a matter-of-fact tone of voice.
"That's creepy," said my Dad. "Some kind of surveillance." But I was determined to find out what caused the noise. So I googled "why is my boxwood making noise" and found out other people have had similar experiences! Turns out this sound is caused by a severe infestation of Boxwood Leafminer, aka Boxwood Gall Midge. I split open a few of the yellowing leaves and discovered many tiny yellow maggots! Mystery solved!
As Jane said, "They munch loud!"
