These mushrooms were found growing out of the ground between two pairs of white pines (Pinus strobus) at the edge of a mowed field.

It had been damp out, and the caps were slimely to the touch at that time. While fairly smooth, it felt as if they had fine scales. When bruised, the gills and cap surface turned first a shade of yellow-orange that, over the course of an hour or so, picked up some reddish-purple coloring before fully converting to a greenish-black.

The stem was firm and slightly hollow towards the base.

Their scent was a musty-wet, but that may have also been due in part to the general dampness.

The spore print was light buff with a yellowish undertone.
