I caught it in a critter keeper to watch the wings expand and see how long it takes. About 60 minutes for the wings to expand, and I stopped the experiment at about 1 hr 30 minutes & humanely dispatched the subject.

Acer campestre- Field Maple

Weather during observation- Partly sunny, 81°f, winds out of the South @ 9mph

Habitat- Roadside find in Tumwater, WA (It was the only tree in the area)

Diagnostic features-  It is a deciduous tree reaching 15–25 m (49–82 ft) tall, with a trunk up to 1 m in diameter, with finely fissured, often somewhat corky bark. The shoots are brown, with dark brown winter buds. The leaves are in opposite pairs, 5–16 cm long (including the 3–9 cm petiole) and 5–10 cm broad, with five blunt, rounded lobes with a smooth margin. Usually monoecious, the flowers are produced in spring at the same time as the leaves open, yellow-green, in erect clusters 4–6 cm across, and are insect-pollinated. The fruit is a samara with two winged achenes aligned at 180°, each achene is 8–10 mm wide, flat, with a 2 cm wing.

This multiflora rose has a bad case of the RRD virus. As well as the usual symptoms, it also has this remarkable occurrence of "cresting", known more scientifically as "fasciation", where a mutation in cells of the growing tip of the twig has cause the twig to grow into this bizarre large flattened disc shape!
