chaparral yucca, Hesperoyucca whipplei, White Mountains, elevation 1595 m (5240 ft).

This is a recently discovered northward range extension (or maybe more accurately, remnant of range contraction) for this species at the southern edge of the Great Basin in the White Mountains. Only this single very healthy plant was found despite multiple further searches of the area. The main range of chaparral yucca is in the southern Sierra Nevada and southwestern California chaparral, into northern Baja California.

Specimen number Morefield 5818.

"The traveller who wishes to visit Abomey will first go to Whydah, the handsomest native town which I have seen in Africa. It has broad streets, an excellent market, and the principal houses are enclosed by walls. In the midst of the town is a large tree, frequented by thousands of bats, which may be seen hanging from its boughs, even feeding on its fruits, in midday."

Is this a Saguaro or a Cardon? There are a lot of mature barrel cacti in this conservation area, but I don't believe that is a barrel cactus.

If it is something like a Saguaro, how did it get here since they are not native to this area? Was it planted by someone or did an animal move a seed and it grew? It is located in Section 6, the desert view conservation area off Onaga trail.

Description

"Large wild tortoise walking in Cherry Valley, Riverside CA. It is the first time we have seen it. We live half a block from Bogart Park and above that is BLM land. I had a friend that had a tortoise that was at least 75 years old (they knew the previous owners ) and it was smaller than this one. This is the largest I have seen in the wild. We had a fire in the foothills above us a week or two before this and that may have been a factor. Someone from the fire dept was following him when we noticed him. They followed him up a dirt road towards Bogart park. We have seen raccoons, coyotes, rabbits, skunks and opossums and bears but no tortoises in the 30 years we have lived here."
