These were found growing out of the broken end of a fallen trunk or very large branch of a hardwood tree. The bark was no longer present, but a remaining twig had a white pith. The nearby trees were all tulip trees, box elders, mulberry, and black walnut--and all the identifiable stumps were from one of the first two species.
Each ball felt damp and firm, but not hard. They did not bruise, but did dent when pressed upon.
This growth had a fine textured surface (which looks rougher than it felt) that formed a quite thin skin. It was filled with a brownish-purple putty-like substance - very pliable.
