Description

The fruit turn a darker red layer in the season (maybe when ripe?). Growing wild in northern Baja California. Locals call it the lemonade tree. I’ve seen both smooth-edged leaves like in my photo and serrated-edges leaves. They both have a sticky substance coating the fruit/seed that is deliciously sour. From the identification photos it looks like the lemonade sumac has the serrated leaves, and sugar bush sumac has the smooth-edged leaves. So I’m calling this as sugar bush sumac. But correct me if that’s incorrect. I would love to know more about this shrub. I think the fruit/seed when ground is the spice sumac. I would love to know more about the food and medicinal applications.
