Description
Hardwood forest, in a low-lying area with moist soil.
Hypogeous fungus, 1.5 cm wide x 2 cm long, pale brown exterior (like a russett potato), tan marbled interior, not bruising; odor undetectable to fainly truffley; ammonia and iron salts not absorbing into the gleba (negative), potassium hyrdroxide readily absorbed into the gleba, darkening the tissue and producing a noticeabley strong, fishy odor; taste not determined. Ascospores ellipsoid to amygdaliform with dense reticulation; hyaline and full of guttules when young, brown when mature, length (21.9) 23.5-27.8 (29.6) µm, x̄ = 25.7 µm; width (14.2) 15.9-19.8 (23) µm, x̄ = 17.9 µm; Q (1.3) 1.3-1.6 (1.8), x̄ = 1.4; reticulation (2.2) 2.7-3.9 (5.0) µm, x̄ = 3.3 µm (n = 30 ascospores measured in distilled water or Melzer's reagent). Asci strongly dextrinoid early in development, becoming weakly dextrinoid to inamyloid when spores are fully mature; 4-5 spores per ascus.
