Male and female pair of black-backed woodpeckers on New Years Day.
Well, shiver me timbers. I heard fluttering in my office, and looked up to see this guy in my window. I have a big Christmas cactus that I brought in...about October. I assume he was pupating in there somewhere.
I was thinking of this species when I saw the striping on the abdomen. Found (dead?) In a cut section of red maple firewood from our yard that I split up last weekend. Body is 2.5 cm long; ovipositor is 1 cm. Chamber is at least 5" deep (i.e., away from the bark) into this section of trunk.
