Colony consists of thatched mound around base of dead standing Populus tremuloides tree. Male alates and workers were present on surface of nest and log. Male alates were observed moving up the trunk to various heights at which they took flight.

Found in decaying wood along underside and interior of fallen Populus tremuloides log surrounded by large thatched nest. Several Formica obscuripes workers were present inside the log, and a dealate Formica dakotensis female was also found under the log.
The presence of clavate setae on the legs and eyes confirms Formicoxenus, and the shiny smooth first gaster tergite suggests F. hirticornis.

Workers present on surface and within moist soil beneath clay tile in lawn next to rose shrub, outside of apartment complex.
Workers move slowly over soil surface, freezing when disturbed by me, or quickly avoiding confrontations with larger arthropods.
Associated with Tetramorium immigrans, Ponera pensylvanica, and Brachymyrmex depilis.
Seven living workers and one dead were observed.
Species is the recently described Strumigenys ananeotes (Longino 2019). Determination was provided by Professor John Longino.
