Now this was a bit of a surprise.
Swam out when I lifted a rock. It then tucked into a space nearby. Very weird things. Habitat shot last. That's the spot he was in before I flipped the rock.
~4cm long
Lower intertidal.
Glow worm larva beside a track at Otari/Wiltons Bush. 30 sec. exposure and fill flash.
An old photograph from colour positive slide taken in ~ January 1993. Depth 5m. New Plymouth breakwater.
Perfectly placed for a photograph lol!
First time observing Bittern in the wild. Waitara estuary 30 April 2022
Kindly picked out by kotare. See https://inaturalist.nz/observations/114436427. At this location at the river mouth it's pretty much the only crab species it could be. Observations of the mud tunnels nearby and shape of the crab in the kotare's beak further support this.
