Description
A green chiton attached to a half crab. We observed this alien looking commensal beast while undertaking an intertidal survey on the reefs off Hawera. It made us jump when we first turned over the rock.

I found about a dozen turreted larval burrows, and all had these "Tower of Sauron" wings off the top. There didn't seem to be any consistency with regards to orientation

Easy to see why the Rosy Maple moth has evolved to look like the samaras (winged fruit) of a maple tree. Adaptation at its best.
Moths came to the lights, and I threw in the samaras that had just fallen from a nearby maple.

Longtongue Fly
Hairy fly with very long tongue - more than twice the lenghth of the body.
A keystone creature as there are many plants that are only pollinated by these flies as their nectar is inaccessible to other pollinators
