A surprise visitor shows up on a marten researcher's camera trap.
This was the first documented wolverine in California since 1922, and caused quite a flap.
DNA from hair told us he was more related to populations in the Rocky Mountains than to California museum specimens. Isotopes in the hair told us where he'd been drinking his water: he started out in the Sawtooth of Idaho.
Could a wolverine walk that far, over freeways and developed areas? A radio-collared one made a similar trip from Canada to Wyoming the next year...

I found this black bear out in my backyard. The bear was a juvenile so it was about 3.5-4 feet tall and 4.5-5 feet long from head to tail.

This sighting was pure luck. I was walking along Blacklick Greenway Trail and noticed a small brown "leaf" embedded in the newly leafing honeysuckles. Upon closer inspection, I noticed the leaf would turn away from me in response to my movement. I then had the biggest thrill of my life when I discovered it was an eastern red bat. He/she probably just crawled out from under the leaf litter below to warm up in the sun. Truly my best find thus far!
