Springtails are Hexapods that followed a different evolutionary path from the invertebrates which we commonly call insects. They are probably not even very closely related to insects; they never had wings, have only simple eyes (not compound ones as in the insects), have only six abdominal segments instead of the usual eleven and eat with quite different mouthparts. Many species can be found on fungi; this one is struggling to navigate across the gills of an overturned mushroom.
