Pine-oak Gall Rust Cronartium quercuum

Observer

maricel-patino

Date

May 25, 2019 12:22 AM EDT

Description

Symptoms

"Initially, a slight hemispherical swelling on one side of the stem appears; this enlarges, becomes spherical and finally elongates. Such elongated galls with collars typically occur on branches of older Pinus but cause little damage. Galls grow on the pine trunk or branches. The outer bark of galls typically bursts irregularly. A gall will grow out a new layer of 'skin' in the current year, and burst again the year after. There are two main gall forms: globose and fusiforme. All forms of C. quercuum in the north-eastern USA and eastern Canada cause globose galls." Plantwise Knowledge Bank
