Apparently it's been 7 years since I first stumbled on this weird little disjunct population, so I was thrilled to see it was still kicking this weekend. If you visit it, please don't pick a thallus like I did 7 years ago to check the lower surface. I've only been able to find a few nearby patches of it so I imagine the population is quite small and it probably needs every square milimeter of thallus. Frankly, they're probably much more threatened by a poorly-operated grader or a pack of rototilling pigs, but still, worth being careful.

Description

Widely scattered tufts (between 3 and many sporangia) of stalked sporangia to 6 mm high, pale lilac brown. Sporotheca sub-cylindrical, slightly tapering at apex; rounded at apex and base, 2.7 mm long x 0.3–0.4 mm diameter. Stalk black, shiny, 0.4–1.5 mm long; black and with reticulate fibers at base when viewed by transmitted light. Hypothallus continuous under groups, membranous, brown and shiny. Peridium fugacious. Columella reaches to below apex of sporotheca where it branches. Capillitium attached to entire length of columella, about 5 meshes across radius, reddish brown; surface net angular with numerous free ends. Spores pale lilac brown in mass, pale by transmitted light, reticulate pattern of faint large meshes between small dark meshes, 6–7 µm.
Note: colour and size makes this a distinctive species in the field. This collection has numerous free ends on the surface net in contrast to another of my collections which has no fee ends. (N.E. Nannenga-Bremekamp states that ‘meshes sometimes almost smooth, sometimes with thorns’.) The reticulate pattern on the spores is distinctive.

Scattered small groups of stalked sporangia to 2.5 mm tall. Sporotheca obovate, 0.7–1 mm diameter, at first pale brown with faint lines of dehiscence, then dark brown before drying to chestnut brown. Stalk 1.5 mm, longitudinally furrowed, dark brown. Hypothallus thick, brown and yellow, furrowed like an extension of the stalk. Peridium double, the outer layer thick, with absorbed particles; inner layer has a geometric pattern.
Elaters unbranched, 5 µm wide with smooth spirals, tapering to a long point. Spores (and elaters) dull yellow in mass, colourless by transmitted light, minutely spiny, 10–11 µm.

Inner surface of peridium is ornamented with wavy folds visible with 1000x oil immersion lens.
