Found this small snail on side of my house. Collected and ID verified by K. Williams on 22 Mar 2023.
Extremely bizarre "snail print." I have no idea how this was created nor how this is physically possible. The snail wasn't smashed because there was no crushed bits or shell or tissue around. But how were the eye imprints made? Even if the snail was quickly, but gently pushed into the pavement I'm sure it would still retract its eyes and not leave a mark. And there's a perfect amount of foam where the shell was. It's like there was a ghost snail. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
I'm marking this as Cornu aspersum because this was on the sidewalk outside of Westfield North County mall. The only "wilderness" around where this was found is a small area of planted bushes and the only snails that seem to live there are Cornu aspersum and Rumina decollata.
