Description

Bacillaria paxillifer, a colonial pennate diatom, from the brackish channel between Fresh Pond and Napeague Bay. It is an alga found in both freshwater and marine environments. How they move is not completely understood. Colonies of this diatom are motile. Members (with their long axes parallel to one another) slide against their neighbors in a coordinated fashion resembling a carpenter's ruler allowing the entire structure to expand or contract.
Phase contrast Zeiss Photomicroscope III using Neofluar PH2 160.40 objective with Optovar set at x1.25 plus variable phone cropping.
From:THE “PARADOX” DIATOM BACILLARIA PAXILLIFER (BACILLARIOPHYTA) REVISITED
Anna‐Maria M. Schmid https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/.../j.1529-8817.2006.00299.x
Defined by its unique colonial locomotion, Bacillaria paxillifer (O. F. Müll.) Hendey was recognized as a single, pandemic species by many phycologists. However, reinvestigation of colonies from different habitats revealed three distinct groups: (A) brackish/freshwater, (B) marine littoral, and (C) marine planktonic taxa. Groups differed in colony and cell form, raphe flanges (RFs), shape and position of transapical ribs (Tr's), and morphogenesis. Linear‐shaped species were restricted to group A: Tr's thickened principally to the interior. Lanceolate forms were confined to groups B and C: valve formation proceeded from an internal base layer to the exterior. The planktonic species differed in the shape of its raphe slit, and the transformation of girdle bands (GBs) into “winglets.” Taxa also differed in chloroplast shape and number. All species formed motile colonies. Siblings adhered via elastic fibrils secreted through their raphe.

Thalassiosira lundiana Fryxell 1975

Phylum: Bacillariophycophyta, Subphylum: Bacillariophytina, Class: Mediophyceae, Order: Thalassiosirales, Family: Thalassiosiraceae.

SEM images of the marine diatom Thalassiosira lundiana Fryxell 1975.
Girdle view:
The valve is convex. 7.0–43.0 μm in diameter. 36-40 pores in 10 µm on girdle bands (Galiano Island (GI) specimens). Occassional long internal tubes from girdle band pores (GI observation).
Valve view:
The areolae form radially, fasciculate sectors, 25–28 in 10 μm; GI= 28 areolae in 10 µm. One central fultoportula (strutted process), sometimes two are present; GI specimens have 1 central process. Many fultoportulae are scattered on the valve face; GI = 12-14 in 10 µm.The short marginal strutted processes form a zig-zag ring, 8-10 in 10 μm. One rimoportula bearing a strong external tube is joined in the marginal ring of up to 16 large occluded processes (Hoppenrath et al. 2007) normally 3–14, with longer external tubes (Li et al. 2014). The valve margin bears strong rims (marginal striae). Thalassiosira punctigera is closely related to T. lundiana, however the latter species has strutted processes scattered on the valve face, two marginal rings of processes and closer spaced areolation (Hasle and Syvertsen 1996). (Fryxell 1975, Mahood et al. 1986: 137, Hoppenrath et al. 2007, Hasle and Syvertsen 1996 and Li et al. 2013).

T. lundiana is new report for Western Canada and the Salish Sea.

Methods:

From a general plankton tow with a 60 µm mesh net in Porlier Pass, North of Galiano Island, June 25, 2022. Fixed in 4% formalin. Sample pipetted onto 12 mm round glass coverslips, dried on a hot pate to 200C, cooled to 75-80C and 3-4 applications of conc. nitric acid to remove organics. Heated again to 200 C for 20 min. Rinsed by soaking in distilled and deionized water. Coverslips mounted with double sided tape onto 13 mm aluminum SEM stubs, then gold sputter coated. Imaging with a Hitachi TM4000 SEM on Galiano Island. at the AMF at UVIC. Thank you Elaine Humphrey of AMF at UVIC for SEM support and Hitachi HiTech Canada for the loan of the SEM. Adjusted in Photoshop. Thanks to Andrew Simon, Emily Greenan and David Leehr for collecting a plankton sample in Porlier Pass on June 25, 2022.

Testate, lobose amoeba with a relatively small, mainly ovoid shell (60µ long x 43µ wide). It seems to fit among the spherical, ovate or pyriform Difflugia species seen here https://arcella.nl/genus-difflugia/ and the smaller Difflugia species highlighted here https://arcella.nl/difflugia-ovoid/. The shell is round in cross section, but the pseudostome (image 2) can not be characterized as smooth/round IMO. Rather, the aperture seems crude and angular due to the large mineral grains used. (Unexpected for Difflugia?) The appearance of the test was spectacular, very much like dichroic glass and seems divided into distinctive anterior and posterior regions. Reviewing the photos in image 2 and 3 suggest an unexpected complexity in the anterior section of the test. For a video see https://youtu.be/oxrIX4ne0H0.
