Yellow-bellied Ichneumon
Photo's are full screen to help see details.
I can't find anything like this shape to get close to id, let alone the markings
- Hairy
- Very long ovipositor
- Over 40 segment antennae
- Thin, bent waist/petiole
- Thin abdomen
- Large ocelli
- Body punctuated with pitting
- Thin legs
- A strange scallop like shape between it's throax segments
- Holds it's wings flat/horizontal at rest
- And finally the yellow markings - at the antennae joins, wing joins, ventrally & postior abdomen
Would love to get tribe or sub-family.
Thought it was a Gasteruptiid, but they seem to hold their wings to the side. And don't seem too hairy.
Found this before in the same location and it's possibly a male in the same genus?, if that helps. www.ellura.info/Diptera-Hymenoptera.html#Ichneumonidae-sp-ES02

Description
Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1) causing human esophagitis. All images are from the same patient and are: cytology brushing, cytology cell block, tissue biopsy H&E stain and HSV-1 immunostain. Cells show the “3 Ms “ that help make the diagnosis: molding, multinucleation, and margination of nuclear chromatin. HSV-1 infects the mouth and upper GI tract. HSV-2 infects the genitalia, genital skin, and the rectum. Both would look the same under the microscope. Of course individual viral particles would need electron microscopy to see. What we see here is the effect of viral infection on esophageal squamous cells.

Unfortunately I didn't get any really good pictures but this is by far one of my coolest finds down in the Keys.
- Dorsal surface of full animal
- Ventral surface of tail doing its signature curl
- Full animal, partially out of focus :(
- Head with almost non-existent ring
- Closer shot of "ring"
- Side view of head, very much in shed
- Another shot of the head
