Unsure if classified as northern or southern bayberry or wax myrtle.
Three. Entering Indian river inlet in the evening. Smaller one in the middle. Lots of fish skipping the surface too. More dolphins (porpoises?) close by further out by jetty’s in ocean. Not sure if same species or from same pod.
About .5-1 mile west of Riley’s Lock, Germantown, MD. (Seneca)
Middlesex Beach. There was another one 100 meters further down the beach as well. :(
Pink-reddish nose. Could be either Grass Carp or European Carp. About 1/2 mile east of Pennyfield Lock in C&O Canal (not Bear Island or whatever Google maps says here). Invasive.
Wing had been lacerated by a bicycle running over it as the towpath. It was still alive and trying to fly so I moved it off into the grass. Such a beauty.
Biggest spiders I've ever seen. It was at least 7" long and a much smaller but still large spider was crawling around it. Looks like a wolf spider but too large...?
Great Falls, MD side.
On towpath between a little bit past Marsden Tract headed west towards Angler’s. Not sure why everything around Carderock always shows up as Cedar Island.
Came across a blondish, small bat on the pavement around midnight. Possibly stunned from sudden cold front and wind blowing in from the ocean? We thought it was something else until it suddenly untucked its wings and flew off a little ways towards a building. Seemed to be ok, perhaps a little disoriented by the bright lights and sudden temp drop? Lots of cicada and moths around so could also have been feeding. Lovely looking bat. Looked tiny until it spread its wings. More golden than red to our eyes but it was dark out.
Bumble bee wet and blown in from the tropical storm Fay.
Between Pennyfield Lock and Blockpoint on towpath. We moved it into the grass as it’s tail end had been squished by a bicycle tire running over it.
On southern arrow-wood.
On canal between Locks 8 and 9 in Cabin John. Don’t know why location says Cedar Island, Glen Echo.
Vicinity of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
Poor lil guy. Not sure if it was already dead when washed ashore or if it stranded on the beach by the large storm surge the day prior. Or fisherman.
Broken and empty Horseshoe Crab shell with FWS tag still attached to the hard shell.
Pelagic.
What is this?
Grayish, pretty small, and apparently nocturnal (photo taken at around 11pm). Location is very sandy soil near dunes and ocean but also close to small pond and nearby brackish stream.
Not sure what appears to be around the neck of the animal on the left in picture 2. It looks like a tracker or something with a band around its neck? I saw it thrashing a lot at the time but assumed it was playing with the others...not sure now.
Transverse or blood arc clam?
Between Violette’s Lock and Blockhouse Point. Larger than usual turtles I see here but too far away to tell.
EDTA: I stand corrected — these are Sanderlings. Thank you! These guys came in with the start of high tide around 19:15-45 EST.
Off Indian River Inlet Bay / Pasture Bay Cove.
NOT Fenwick Island despite what the map/coordinates saying (there’s a bug in the map system it seems).
Not sure if this is the correct tree or not. Ive noticed that many of these beauties near the Potomac River off the towpath in Montgomery County have fallen over and died in the last few years. Curious to know why. This was on the billy goat trail within Carderock headed east along the river. (Not sure why this always shows up as Cedar a Island now).
Just paw prints in the snow along the wall overlooking Saint Laurent /Lawrence River.
Very dark and bigger than the all the ones I’ve ever seen around here. In fact, I thought it was a black bear cub at first. It appeared to be digging (?) down into the dirt by the rock cliff looking to sleep. We didn’t notice any dams within the 2 miles around it (although there has been dams in the past nearby), but we could’ve missed it. Seemed a bit of an odd situation and behavior. Hope it’s OK.
The stunning, vibrant lavender-violet tail/body, which was much more distinctive and showy than this photo depicts, is throwing me off. It’s like a mix of a whitetail and blue corporal...
The wing tips and pattern is as well. ID?
Large bird of prey chasing a blue jay into our yard
Sorry about the lousy photos. I had to make a video as it was moving so much, flying around and the sun was very bright so it appears paler yellow than it really is.
Carderock Park end lot parking lot
Horrible due to distance and iPhone
On towpath between Blockhouse Point and Pennyfield Lock. 13 Jul 2019
ID needed.
Location: Carderock along Billy Goat Trail up above the Potomac River where there’s a slight rocky bluff and a small ravine on the other side.
White violets intermixed amongst the usual meadow violets and a few buttercups. I noticed that the white variety were in more direct sunlight than the clusters of the violet-colored violets. Are the what we used to call Confederate Violets? And are they the same species? I don't recall often seeing white violets growing wild dispersed with purples...prob wrong.
