Eastern Cicada-killer Wasp (Sphecius speciosus)

Observer

keimwj

Date

July 5, 2011 04:01 PM EDT

Description

05 Jul 2011.
Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Westchester Co, NY.
This female wasp has paralyzed a newly emerged cicada, and is now laboriously flying and dragging the hapless creature to the wasp's nest burrow. There it will lay eggs IN the cicada, which will hatch into larvae that will consume the cicada from the inside out. Appropriate behavior on the scene of the Headless Horseman's escapades!
