Hi @jasonrgrant @ajwright @brucebennett @veronika_johansson @amc @blue_celery @rick_williams @alex_abair @choess, would you agree with transferring (most of) the species currently listed in combination with Chamerion to the genus Chamaenerion, following https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamaenerion? (see extensive links at end of that article)

Some of these species are also present in iNat's taxonomy in combination with Epilobium, so some changes are definitely needed here.

Chamaenerion angustifolium
Chamaenerion conspersum
Chamaenerion latifolium
Chamaenerion speciosum
Chamaenerion colchicum
Chamaenerion dodonaei
Chamaenerion fleischeri
Chamaenerion stevenii

Yes, that's the paper summarized in the Wiki article above

And here are the taxa (also) available in combination with Epilobium:

www.inaturalist.org/taxa/336658-Epilobium-fleischeri

Forgot to tag @tiggrx here, who made me aware of this issue.

I'll admit that I don't know much about Onagraceae. However, after reading the paper by Sennikov, I'm convinced that the suggested changes to iNat's taxonomy are appropriate. I can say that these proposed changes are also consistent with the current system used by the Oregon State University Herbarium (for what it's worth).

Sorry, wasn't my intention to sign this as "resolved", done by error, since there is apparently no direct link at list of flagged taxa.
I am not much familiar with taxonomic changes concerning Epilobium (s.lato?) and Chamaenerion (hard to type right!), respectively Chamerion, thus can't give advice.
Has Epilobium just been split, or renamed as a whole? @nutcracker

If everyone is ok with this change, I'll swap Chamerion with Chamaenerion:

Thanks, got the right spelling now, was just more confusing since presence of Chamerion.
In case Chamaenerion is the right genus and spelling, all belonging species shall be moved to there, all or nothing, let's go ahead, Jakob!

I've just downloaded the Sennikov article (let me know if any of you want me to email it to you), and I agree, the spelling as Chamaenerion is correct, and the change should be made in iNaturalist.

@nutcracker have you heard of Sci-Hub?

Posted by jakob over 6 years ago

Since https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/336658-Epilobium-fleischeri does belong to genus Chamaenerion, this should be swapped as well to clear duplicate active taxa. Anyone ready for doing?

Posted by erwin_pteridophilos over 6 years ago

Thanks, Erwin, I'll take care of that.

Email me if you want the article on Chamerion/Chamaenerion:
jason.grant@unine.ch

I sent a quick email to Alexander Sennikov today, and he tells me that the name Chamaenerion is indeed the valid one, and no one has ever tried to conserve Chamerion. So, its OK that we're made the change here on iNaturalist, and everywhere.

Thanks everyone, taxon change has been committed!

OK, I just read this above, and this seems to be a tricky situation. I will try to get my hands on the Sennikov paper. I did flag this issue before I read this thread.

Lena, as the issue seems to be cleared, saying Chamaenerion got priority over Chamerion, you might like to resolve https://www.inaturalist.org/flags/128464 upon the former taxon?

Posted by erwin_pteridophilos over 6 years ago

Hi everybody - sorry for flagging so quickly but I didn't see this thread until later. And now I have checked this with Jason Grant, Alex Sennikov and Kanchi Gandhi and everyone agrees, it should be Chamaenerion :) All is good. I think @jakob resolved the flag I had put on Chamerion. Sorry for reacting with flagging before finding this thread with the explanation.
