Done - split (see comments) |
I like this idea; makes perfect sense (if only I was allowed to read the paper).
Before we make the change, BODATSA hasn't acknowledged it yet. I see POWO already has - @tonyrebelo
We recognise two varieties of Plantago crassifolia here, but because I'm restricted from viewing the paper, what happens to these? Or does it omit them entirely?
"Plantago carnosa Lam., Tabl. Encycl. 1: 341. 1792 – Lectotype (designated here): SOUTH AFRICA. E Cap., Bonae Spei, s.d., s.coll. (P barcode P00380818 [photo!]).
= Plantago hirsuta Thunb., Prodr. Pl. Cap. 1: 29. 1794 ≡ P. thunbergii Poir. in Lamarck, Encycl., Suppl. 4: 431. 1816 ≡ P. carnosa var. hirsuta (Thunb.) Bég. in Bull. Soc. Bot. Ital. 1906: 92. 1906 ≡ P. crassifolia var. hirsuta (Thunb.) Pilg. in Engler, Pflanzenr. IV. 269 (Heft 102): 162. 1937 – Type: Cape of Good Hope, Thunberg 3518 (UPS barcode UPS: V-003518). = Plantago litoraria Fourc. in Trans. Roy. Soc. South Africa 21: 96. 1932 – Holotype: Western Cape, Eerste River, Fourcade nr. 1961
(BOL barcode BOL201183!)".
I guess that answers that.
All Plantago crassifolia and children in South Africa to be swapped to P. carnosa
(no children).
mentioned:
"The Wellington population (characterised by very dense, nearly tomentose indumentum; not sequenced) might have served Thunberg (1794) as the basis for description of P. hirsuta Thunb. (syn. P. crassifolia var. hirsuta (Thunb.) Pilg. and P. carnosa var. hirsuta (Thunb.) Bég.). We suggest that the incipient morphological separation of these populations is underpinning the genetic differentiation from the typical coastal P. carnosa. These marginal populations need further scrutiny, and therefore we refrain from capturing their uniqueness in formal taxonomic terms."
Plantago crassifolia variety-level observations (all within South Africa) moved to P. carnosa: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/116107
All remaining Plantago crassifolia species-level observations (in South Africa only) moved to P. carnosa: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/116079
Synonyms adjusted.
