redpandakitty Carolina Wolf Spider (Hogna carolinensis)

Very large number of wolf spider species, and even spiders from other families, get misidentified as this species.

I try to re-identify as many of these as possible, but with so many spiders erroneously receiving this identification the vast majority are getting missed. Hogna carolinensis is actually rarely able to be properly identified with a photo as there are a few similar looking species with overlapping ranges.

additional comment from duplicate flag:
@chuuuuung: "Seconding redpandakitty's flag. Auto-suggest thinks every wolf spider is H. carolinensis, and I don't know wolf spiders well enough to try fixing misidentifications."

Unfortunately there isn't a way to fix or remove individual computer vision suggestions (it's been requested and denied). Helping reidentify misidentifications will help train future versions of computer vision.

Here's a link to identify observations that have one ID of Hogna carolinensis:
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?ident_taxon_id=122621

If you know it's not H. carolinensis, but don't know which kind of wolf spider it is, it's OK to just ID as Lycosidae and disagree with H. carolinensis.

@shespider is doing a tremendous job right now cleaning up misidentified Hogna carolinensis. Three cheers for her!

awesome, thanks for all your work

You're welcome and thanks ... for ones that have had too many wrong ID suggestions for me to cancel out on my own, should I link to them here for help or @ anyone in particular?

Such as:

Also, the representative image for Tigrosa grandis is a Tigrosa helluo ... I can't figure out how to fix it.

On the taxon page there's a button labelled "Curation" on the right, below the seasonality tab. It opens a small menu which has the option "Edit Photos".

When I have time I'll run through the remaining observations in the areas you've cleared, but feel free to leave a link here or @ me if you'd like a faster response.

... thanks!

These could all use a little extra push to get them out of H. carolinensis:

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/47588452

I think I got most of the obvious misfiles sans some oddballs in western TX and FL that I don't know what to do with yet and subscribed to the taxon in case more keep piling on. I'll go through them again in another day or so.

Unfortunately, due to (1) the uploader opting out of community ID and (2) putting too much faith into the suggested IDs, this observation will not move out of H. carolinensis unless the uploader changes their initial ID. Previous experiences with this user indicate this is highly unlikely. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/69672451

Yes, but once the community taxon changed to something else (i.e. once enough people disagreed) the observation got removed from the default maps.

Oh jeez, that's from Bradford, OH. Just FYI, that city is a hotbed for bad IDs and for users dogpiling onto aforementioned bad IDs due to a bunch of students being required to use iNaturalist for a class.

Yeah, it looks like they're all from OH. I got the impression it was a bunch of kids that maybe knew each other.

closing this since its not a taxonomy curation issue -
