@keith_seifert or @jonathan_mack, I know this isn't your area geographically, but perhaps you have an opinion?
@sea-kangaroo, as the creator of this taxon I think you should be notified about this.
Hi
not sure I can be of any help unfortunately. Hard to tell without a description of what Ellis observed, although the type specimen do appear to exist. Ellis described several species of Heterosporium during that time period (1897), which are described as having echinulate pale yellow conidia with 1-3 septa which do not fit with either protologue you have shown.
I think that the name Heterosporium californicum should remain in use for now, until some fresh individuals are studied under the microscope and compared with Heteroconium glutinosum, Trimmatostroma eriodictyonis and Heterosporium/Cladosporium
Unless of course Keith Seifert propose otherwise, as he have much better knowledge than I do.
There are a couple published sooty molds that occur on Eriodictyon californicum, including Heteroconium glutinosum (= Torula glutinosa; description in http://www.librifungorum.org/Image.asp?Nav=yes&FirstPage=290977&LastPage=292090&NextPage=291127) and Trimmatostroma eriodictyonis (= Coniothecium eriodictyonis; description http://www.librifungorum.org/Image.asp?ItemID=395&ImageFileName=006/0331b.jpg). I haven't seen M.B. Ellis' description and illustrations (if any) of the latter taxon yet, but the descriptions sound similar to me. I also have not seem microscopy of what people are calling Heterosporium californicum to compare. Has anyone looked at it, and do you have an opinion as to where to swap this taxon? @alan_rockefeller @leptonia @pogon @noah_siegel
