Based on IPNI and POWO it seems that none of the subspecific taxa are currently accepted (and are synonymised with M. azedarach) but I can't find a source for this apart from POWO's justification: Govaerts, R., Nic Lughadha, E., Black, N., Turner, R. & Paton, A. (2021). The World Checklist of Vascular Plants, a continuously updated resource for exploring global plant diversity. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-021-00997-6. Scientific Data 8: 215. [Cited as Melia azedarach.]
@fernslu @jeremygilmore @aavankampen do any of you have any thoughts regarding this?
@craig-r Yes I see the World Checklist of Vascular Plants only accepts M. azedarach. Similarly Melia var. australasica is not accepted in the Australasian Plant Census (https://biodiversity.org.au/nsl/services/search/taxonomy?product=APC&tree.id=51209179&name=melia+azedarach+var.&inc._scientific=&inc.scientific=on&inc._cultivar=&max=100&display=apc&search=true).
I don't see any reason to retain M. azedarach var. azedarach as a separate taxon.
Thanks Tony. I don't see any reason to keep this either especially as it's the type variety (i.e nominate in zoology terms) and there are no accepted varieties. I've drafted a swap to put them all into M. azedarach
looks good to me to commit https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/115109
If no varieties are recognised then maybe this should be merged with the parent
