Barbary Macaque

Macaca sylvanus

Original Range and subspecies 3

The Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus) is a monkey that occurs in the forests of northwestern Africa, with a small (re)introduced population in Gibraltar. During the interglacials this macaque or a closely related species occurred over a much wider range: remains that were identified to this species have been found in France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Romania, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Reintroduction efforts so far 4

None, apart from the population in Gibraltar. Considering our warming climate and the species' uncertain future in North Africa, it might be worth considering bringing back the macaques to our forests in Europe and the Levant, where they occurred during all previous warm periods.
