Description: The Common Loon has many different colors depending on their age and the season. Loons sit low in the water with a heavy body and thick bill. Both males and females have a distinctive dark green head that appears black from a distance. During the breeding season they have a black and white checkered back.
The Common Loon spends its summer in Canada and migrates down to the states in the winter.

Habitat: Open ocean, bays, and lakes. Nests on wooded lakes.

Fun Facts: The Common Loon can dive over 200 feet under the surface of the water in search of food. Their legs are so far back on their body, they have difficulty walking on land.
