San Juan Island Spring Street International School’s Book of Birds By 7th Grade Middle School Science Students
Introduction:
In our 7th grade science class, we started a project by looking at field guides and determining what we liked about them. We came up with a list of criteria for our own field guide. We decided we liked a lot of wildlife, but we especially liked birds, so we began to draw birds. We went out birding, we cleaned out bird boxes and recorded what kinds of birds were nesting in the boxes, and we drew birds. We are an eclectic group of students who like to ride horses, read, ski, play basketball and baseball, and draw birds.
We were inspired by the work of Roger Tory Peterson and David Sibley, and while we are fully responsible for the inaccuracies in our bird illustrations, we learned a lot about our local birds through this project and decided to call our book a Book of Birds, rather than a field guide. While you might not be able to ID every bird in our book from our illustrations, we hope the book helps you fall in love with birds the way we did!
