Sleepy Duskywing

Erynnis brizo

Description 2

A small, short-winged duskywing flying mostly from late April to late May and associating closely with scrub oak (Quercus ilicifolia), its larval host plant. Because of this plant association, this butterfly is found mostly on the Vineyard sandplain, where lean soils and a long history of fire have promoted the abundance of scrub oak. While the species can be found elsewhere on the Island, Sleepy Duskywing is most easily found in Manuel F. Correllus State Forest, where it can be quite common. This species lacks apical hyaline spots on the forewing, which helps distinguish it from Juvenal's Duskying (the distribution and seasonality of these species overlap extensively). Bold markings of ladder-like, parallel lines are also an important field mark. Vineyard records span from April 14 to June 6.
