Some invasive species have native look-alikes, so look closely to avoid causing counterproductive harm to native flora. Wavy-leaf thistle is a native that looks similar to invasive Scotch thistle (cotton thistle), though the leaves are more divided. Pale comandra (bastard toadflax) is a native plant that looks much like newly emerging invasive Dalmatian toadflax. Leaves of native violets (and nonnative Viola odorata) can look similar to young garlic mustard leaves. Smooth sumac (a small bush) has leaves that are similar to the invasive tree of heaven.
