eMammal is a tool for collecting, archiving, and sharing camera trapping images and data. Camera traps are remotely activated cameras that take pictures when either a motion sensor, infrared sensor or light beam detects an object in its view. Volunteers and scientists with the Smithsonian Institution have been deploying cameras in Virginia and the greater Washington, D.C. area since 2007. The species listed in this field guide have all been found by these Virginia-based cameras in the last several years. To see photos from these cameras and learn more about eMammal at emammal.si.edu.
