Description

Not planted. Possibly naturally occurring although I don't believe this species is native to the NYC area.

I don't post exact locations of native plants due to obvious reasons. It seems that plant poaching is not only exclusive to rarities..

Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio)

Observer

Date

Description

Calls at the following locations:

Clip 1: Second 6, 20
Clip 2: Seconds 16-17, 47-48, 57, 1:23

Also heard during the first 20 seconds are the clacking sounds, which the owl produces by snapping their bill mandibles together. They make these sounds when they are annoyed, as was the case here - I was walking too close to the owl's perch.

Clip 3: Second 13, 36

Description

Two of these showed up spontaneously in my garden. Monarda didyma and M. fistulosa are established from local seed so these are no doubt hybrids of the two. Last picture shows the hybrid in the middle, didyma on the left, and fistulosa on the right.

Many roots, hence "polyrhiza".

This duckweed accumulates heavy metals, which makes this plant useful for bioremediation purposes for accumulating things like mercury, arsenic, phosphates and nitrates.
