What

Orange Peatmoss (Sphagnum subsecundum)

Observer

Description

In the field I thought this was going to be Sphagnum contortum, but stem section rules this out. All fits with Sphagnum Subsecundum again instead.

What

Austin's Sphagnum (Sphagnum austinii)

Observer

andrewmelton

Date

October 22, 2019 03:35 PM CEST

Description

Another example of sphagnum Austinii. Raised hummock which is hard when you press on it. Very tightly packed. What is particularly unusual is the presence of capsules which are meant to be very rare. Could be that the capsules are coming from other species mixed in. Can certainly see S. Capillifolium.
