Sea Nymph Amphibolis antarctica

Description

Beach washed at estuary mouth. A dislodged mat about 25 cm wide with first pic as found and 2nd pic is taken after I flipped it over to show the dense tangle of stolons or rhizomal mat base of attachment (detached by natural forces or perhaps an anchor).Probably an indicator of the increasing number and severity of the inshore seagrass meadow blowouts and scarps within Yankalilla Bay over the past few decades.,more severe and continuous along the north Normanville beach blue line (blue line is local vernacular for the line where seagrass meadows meet sandy substrate, which in relatively undisturbed /almost pristine bays is usually a gentle gradient in the shallowest subtidal but currently at Normanville north beach it's a half to 1 m dropoff with steeper than normal sandy gradient inshore from deeper subtidal. This beach is in trouble, just like those at Hallett Cove and Brighton Seacliff, Glenelg et al. But being further south and in a less obviously degraded state, most of the local population remain unaware of the accelerating sand loss. The north dunes beach frontage now has a perennial sandy cliff along the entire length, where only about a decade ago the cliffs of sand loss from the frontline dunes were an ephemeral seasonal phenomenon.

King Cuttlefish Sepia hedleyi

Observer

Description

There were numerous specimens on the beach today, plus some S. apama and S. braggi (both of which I can recognise now). This type ranged from 5 cm (images #3 & #4) upto about 15 cm. They are by far the most numerous type of bone, with new ones appearing en masse every now and then.
Based on the following reference, it could be S. cultrata - https://scienceforlife365.wordpress.com/tag/cuttlefish/
However Mandy's Guide book says these reach a maximum length of only 10 cm.
S. hedleyi on the other hand has a maximum length of 12 cm (according to the Guide) so I've gone with that.
They both look very similar in the Guide.
This choice also corresponds with @danimations SA Cuttlefish Guide the puts S. hedleyi at a minimum depth of 40 metres, about the maximum depth of Gulf St Vincent. s. cultrata doesn't reside shallower than 132 m. according to that source, so less likely to wash-up on this shore.

Re ID, I read everything I could find online (mainly by @danimations) and came to the conclusion that apama was the only option ... I'm sure Dan will correct me if that's wrong.
