Found a second location with Hazelnut in Indian Heights Park. There are no nuts to easily distinguish, but the glandular hairs on the new twigs and leaf stalks (petioles) indicate American Hazelnut rather than Beaked.
On the Mt Mansfield Toll Road, near The Nose

Observation made in Martin Burns WMA, but exact location is obscured, as the species is endangered in MA.
Habitat: Dry, rocky area on the edge of the woods.
