Cape Grey Mongoose (Herpestes pulverulentus)

Observer

Description

We saw these mongooses (mongeese?) several times during walks on the cliff path. They were quite skittish though, and usually only gave glimpses of their tails disappearing into the fynbos.
When I scared this guy off I waited and eventually he came back out of the bushes and got a drink at a little puddle. The light was bad but I'm happy to have gotten some sort of photo.

Description

Initially thought this was a lioness but could be a leopard given what looks likes very pale underside and black markings, suggestive of spots? The fact it was lying up under trees at noon makes lion more likely.
