Pasture/Ag Land
Caught in mist net in my Northern Saw-whet Owl banding operation. In many hundreds of owls, the first bat ever in a net.
Dead. Not yet stiff, but smelly. May have been a hit by a bike or stepped on.
Found this guy on the ground under the bat house. Put him in a nearby tree and watched him take off to hunt around dusk.
Determined by Keith Lott, USFWS Wildlife Biologist.
is this a little brown or big brown..?
Found this guy laying near the entrance to the Orthopedic and Heart center at Arlington Memorial Hospital. He was dead but I decided to document its life just to add some data on the find. This really broke my heart but with the pity for the poor creature I was very interested in its features. I don't often come across bats that often so this was a real treat to see the cool features of the head and the rest of the body. I am not sure if this is the right ID or not but I am sure I will be pointed in the right direction. Bats are an interest of mine but I only know their general natural history and not so much the species. This was a real interesting summer. When we were doing the mothing night at Parr Park @kimberlietx found one there. I didn't really get great pictures of that one so I left it out but still I see why the data on dead things is so viable so I am kind of singing a different tune about not getting dead things; from now on I am adding them to my page. This was a really interesting bat and by far the largest specimen I have ever seen. It may be in tact but it looks like some of the back maybe gone but it may just be a trick of the eye. Just wanted to post this one with out of order since it was such an interesting find. Very sad but heck that is life and now it is time for nature to take its course. This also makes bat post number one. Another mammal not to the life list but on the iNaturalist list for me. My mom had an appointment today and after I decided to take a little walk around and take a few photos of things that I could find.
