A Short-horned Grasshopper (Acrididae sp.), photographed on the tinted window of a business near the intersection of Bartolemé Mitre and Rincón in the Ciudad Vieja District of Montevideo, Uruguay. This photograph was taken in the late spring, when Montevideo often experiences intrmittent showers and cool, gusty winds blowing in from the south or southwest. I discovered that, under these conditions, many of the local insects will take refuge on the walls and windows of the old buildings of Ciudad Viejo, below ample eaves that provide them with a bit of shelter. Even so, this grasshopper was a bit of a surprise, as there isn't a lot of grass in Ciudad Vieja, especially where this grasshopper was photographed.
Identifying this insect as a Short-horneed Grasshopper in the Acrididae family seems reasonable; note the relatively short antennae on this invididual. However, as I know little about the grasshoppers of Uruguay, this is about as far as I can take the identification of his insect. I certainly welcome any suggestions as to its genus and species identification.
Dimensions: Body length was between 4 and 5 cm long.
