Found in a sandy packed soil on the side of a busy road.
The size of a blackberry knob 2-3mm
this is a series of photos of one of the juveniles
I was standing by the bridge at the east end of the pond watching the American Kestrels, Western Kingbirds, Swallows and a few Lesser Nighthawks putting on an aerial show hunting the numerous dragonflies recently seen here. Suddenly with a flurry of wings this bird flew in from behind me and landed on the railing of the bridge then hopped down to a lower rail where the lower part of its body was obscured by foliage between us. The bird was only about 15 feet from me so I didn't move to get a cleaner angle, thinking it would fly any moment anyway. Wrong - this young hawk stayed perched in the same place for 5 minutes (first photo 7:45 am, last at 7:49 am although all photos in the observation display the time of the first by iNat convention). After perching it looked over at me (photo 1) then out over the pond (2) and after that gave one juvenile Cooper's call (3). The other photos are of the bird apparently looking, as I was, at the activity in the air over the pond as the flycatching birds performed. Twice this bird looked over at me but didn't seem to be bothered. It did feel a little strange standing with the juvenile watching the flycatching - like being there with @lonnyholmes but without the conversation.
