Description

The widely spreading inflorescence branches render the very open panicles of Poa pratensis. Here Poa pratensis grows with Bromus inermis (smooth brome) and Agropyron repens (quackgrass) - these grasses represented by the broader leaves at this site.

Kentucky bluegrass is one of the most common grasses on Wild Horse island and this is likely a reflection of a history of intensive grazing. When mature and ungrazed or unmowed, Kentucky bluegrass stands 1 m tall or more.

Kentucky bluegrass is most abundant alongside or near cropfields. It occurs in low abundance in nearby rangeland steppe where native plants are abundant and diverse. This site is on Broyles Farm near Rapelje.

Observer

Description

In addition to the lemmas with blunt tips, the spikelets of Puccinellia tend to be distinctively appressed to the inflorescence branches. This species might be confused with Poa secunda, Sandberg bluegrass, except for its appressed spikelet orientation. Sporadically abundant along banks and seeps in the Headwaters State Park area northeast of Three Forks.

Description

Inhabiting a roadside stream near Hyalite Reservoir, Puccinellia is very Poa-like (e.g., Poa secunda or Poa palustris) except for its relatively blunt lemma tips, spikelets mostly appressed to inflorescence rachises that are distinctly scabrous (much more so than Poa species). This species might be confused with Poa secunda, Sandberg bluegrass, except for its appressed spikelet orientation.

Schedonorus pratensis (meadow fescue) may differ from Schedonorus arundinaceus (tall fescue) by being able to form even stands rather than clumps or bunches, such as in this disturbed setting in Gallatin Gateway where it is nearly monodominant.

Description

Schedonorus pratensis, meadow fescue, differs from Schedonorus arundinaceus, tall fescue, by its more slender stature. The stems don't stand erect but rather ascend upward while the generally narrow inflorescence arches outward. The lemmas generally lack awns and the auricles lack the ciliate fringe. Here in the Bear Canyon area, meadow fescue blends in with other introduced perennial grasses, mostly Timothy (Phleum pratense), smooth brome (Bromus inermis), and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata).
