as i came over the hill, i saw the dirt before the lake, but it was hard to see the small birds there against the dirt. they saw me though, and about half of them flew away right away (to the northwest), calling loudly. a few of them stayed for a while for me to take photos until i got too close. and in the end, there was only one brave (or maybe injured?) one still remaining.
